Primary Healthcare in the Langeberg

In case of an emergency contact 1017

There are three types of services at all clinics and Community Day Centres:

1. Preventative services are those that prevent ill health or pregnancy, such as family planning and immunisations. If you think that you may be pregnant, do not wait; visit your clinic immediately. The earlier you book, the healthier you and baby can be during pregnancy.  If your pregnancy is too far along, we can no longer do a SONAR. SONARS are only available on certain days.
2. Chronic services are for people who have permanent health conditions, such as High Blood Pressure or Diabetes. They need medication and check-ups to remain healthy.
Preventative and Chronic services are planned visits; you know when to visit the clinic, because you have appointment for a next visit. We are also expecting you.
3. Acute visits refers to when you become ill and visit the clinic without an appointment. You will be evaluated by the nurse. The nurse is trained to establish whether you need to be seen immediately or whether you need to make an appointment to be seen on another day. If you are very ill, the nurse may call an ambulance to take you to the hospital.
If a clinic does not offer the services that you need, you will be REFERRED. This means that you will be given a letter and an appointment date on which you need to go to another facility that has the services you need. Ask the person referring you about HealthNet (patient transport).
Some services are only available on certain days; it is important that you visit the clinic at the time and date indicated. Please tell the clerk if you need a different time.
Make sure that you visit the clinic or hospital as you have been referred to.

You do NOT have to make an appointment for the following services:
• Emergency Contraception (morning after pill) Emergency Contraception can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.
• Termination of Pregnancy (TOP) only done at certain facilities
• Medical Male Circumcision (MMC) only done at certain facilities
