CORRECTION OF MISREPRESENTATION

Langeberg Municipality wishes to address and correct the misleading information currently circulating on social media, based on a poster titled “Failed Municipalities as per National Treasury List”.  

This poster incorrectly lists Langeberg Municipality among municipalities cited under Section 216(2) of the Constitution. The inclusion of Langeberg is factually wrong and damaging to our reputation.

Key Clarifications:

- According to verified reports and correspondence with Provincial Treasury, the municipality that should have been listed is Laingsburg, not Langeberg.  

- The poster itself is outdated and inaccurate. It references 75 municipalities, whereas National Treasury has withheld transfers from 69 municipalities, not 75.  

- The graphic is clearly marked 2024/25, further confirming that it is not aligned with current, verified information.  

- Langeberg Municipality has not been subjected to financial transfer suspension under Section 216(2).  

Statement from Danie Lubbe, Municipal Manager:

“This error has caused unnecessary reputational harm to Langeberg Municipality. Our name is often confused with Laingsburg due to similarity, but we must stress that Langeberg is not on the National Treasury’s list. We have formally requested Parliament to issue a correction and await their response."
