Solid Waste Management
Cleansing:
We ensure the cleanliness of Langeberg's streets and public places. We also manage the removal of animal carcasses from public areas and roadways, as well as the cleaning and collection of garbage from businesses, residential properties and informal settlements.
Other tasks include:
- Provision and servicing of street litter bins.
- Picking up litter and clearing illegal dumping.
- Cleaning hawker areas.
- Overseeing and/or facilitating various cleaning programmes.
Refuse collection service:
We collect garbage bags and 240ℓ wheelie bins from the pavement of formal properties every week.
Place your bin on the pavement in front of your property by 07:45 on your weekly scheduled waste collection days. Placing your garbage out the day before could result in a fine. We provide 240ℓ wheelie bins to property owners upon application.

Other services include:
- Ad hoc removal of garden refuse.
- Collect recyclables in all areas.
- Participate in the mobile Swop-Shop project.
- Provide refuse removal services at events.
Waste disposal activities:
The Solid Waste Management department ensures legally compliant, responsible, and environmentally acceptable waste management through the following services:
- Chip green waste for composting
- Handle and process recyclable waste at the material recovery facility.
- Transport waste from transfer stations to waste disposal and composting facilities.
Drop-off and transfer stations:
Residents can use our facilities to drop off any non-hazardous waste that cannot be managed through the weekly scheduled waste collection service. Vehicles with a maximum carrying capacity of 2m³ can enter the facility once per day.

Composting:
We ensure a controlled microbial composting (CMC) process. Compostable materials that provide both carbon and nitrogen include leaves, straw, plant pruning, grass cuttings, sawdust, and vegetable garden waste.
Simple monitoring measures ensure the quality of the final product. The USDA certified organic fertilizer can be purchased from Langeberg Municipality and is suitable for use by organic growers.
