Let's do our part to save electricity at home and at work

While loadshedding continues, we all need to do our part to save electricity at home and at work. We also need to know how to deal with power cuts should we experience them for prolonged periods of time.

Premier Alan Winde recently said; “I am gravely concerned generally at the situation, which is not improving. The damage rolling power cuts are doing to the provincial economy is considerable.” It is, therefore, only by working together that we may overcome this challenge.

Please see our tips below in order to remove pressure from the grid. Switch off all lights when leaving the office; Please ensure windows are closed if the aircon is on; Switch the aircon off before leaving the office; Stop the boiler from being an energy guzzler, save electricity by switching it off when you leave; Save electricity and paper by only printing what you need; and Please switch off your computer, plugs, and chargers when leaving the office at the end of the day. When at home, switch off all appliances on the wall and pull-out chargers. This could save up to 6% on electricity costs; Turn down geyser temperatures to 60 degrees Celsius. This can save up to 5% on one’s electricity bill; Fit geysers with geyser blankets to prevent heat loss; Replace ordinary lightbulbs with energy-saving ones; and Set pool pumps to run for fewer hours.

Remember to consider your property’s security as security systems are often not operative during loadshedding. It is, therefore, important to be aware of both home and neighbourhood security during a blackout.

Make sure your cell phone is fully charged when the power is on
Invest in a small gas lamp for good-quality lighting over a large area
Invest in a small gas cooker for essential meals and to boil water
Prepare meals beforehand based on your loadshedding schedule
Remember to switch off your oven if it was on when the power shortage started
Keep boiled water in thermos flasks
Keep frozen bottled water in your freezer to help keep food cold during long periods of load shedding
Keep a battery or solar-powered torch or candle in a place where it will be easy to find (make sure you have an extra set of batteries)

Terwyl beurtkrag voortduur, moet ons almal ons deel doen om elektrisiteit tuis en by die werk te bespaar. Ons moet ook weet hoe om dit te hanteer wanneer ons vir lang tydperke beurtkrag het.

Premier Alan Winde het onlangs gesê: "Ek is ernstig besorg oor die situasie wat nie verbeter nie. Die skade wat die voortdurende beurtkrag aan die provinsiale ekonomie doen, is groot.” Dit is dus slegs deur saam te werk dat ons hierdie uitdaging kan oorkom.

Raadpleeg ons wenke hieronder om die druk op die netwerk te verlig. Skakel alle ligte af wanneer jy die kantoor verlaat; Sorg dat vensters toe is indien die lugversorging aan is; Skakel die lugversorging af voordat jy die kantoor verlaat; Keer dat jou die warmwatertenk jou energie vreet en bespaar elektrisiteit deur dit af te skakel wanneer jy vertrek; Bespaar elektrisiteit en papier deur slegs uit te druk wat jy werklik nodig het; Skakel jou rekenaar, muurproppe en laaiers af wanneer jy die kantoor aan die einde van die dag verlaat; Wanneer jy tuis is, skakel alle toestelle af en trek die laaiers uit die prop uit. Dit kan tot 6% bespaar op elektrisiteitskoste; Draai geisertemperature af tot 60 grade Celsius. Dit kan tot 5% op die elektrisiteitsrekening bespaar; Installeer geisers met geiserkomberse om hitteverlies te voorkom; Vervang gewone gloeilampe met energiebesparende gloeilampe; en Stel swembadpompe om minder ure aan te wees.
