LIQUOR TRADING HOURS IN LANGEBERG MUNICIPALITY
The Langeberg Municipality is committed to promoting a safe, healthy, and well-regulated environment for all residents. Trading in liquor is regulated in terms of the Western Cape Liquor Act and related legislation including the Municipal By-law “Control of Undertakings that sell Liquor to the Public, 2017” which regulates when liquor may be sold within the Langeberg municipal area.
Understanding these trading hours helps businesses remain compliant and supports community wellbeing. No person or institution may sell liquor outside the permitted trading hours.
ON-SITE CONSUMPTION STANDARD TRADING HOURS
Example: Restaurants, Bars, Hotels, Nightclubs, Special Events and Temporary Liquor Licences.
Trading hours are set out in the Schedule in the By-law and depend on the location of the premises:
1. Adjacent to or across the street from residential properties:
- Sunday to Thursday: 07:00 – 22:00
- Friday & Saturday: 07:00 – 24:00
2. In non-residential areas (including hotels and nightclubs):
- Sunday to Saturday: 07:00 – 02:00 (next day)
Liquor may not be consumed outside of these permitted hours.
OFF-SITE CONSUMPTION STANDARD TRADING HOURS
Example: Liquor Stores, Special Events and Temporary Liquor Licences.
- Monday to Sunday: 08:00 – 20:00
- Good Friday & Christmas Day: 08:00 – 13:00
Tourist facilities (wine cellars selling their own products):
- Daily: 07:00 – 24:00
- Good Friday & Christmas Day: 08:00 – 13:00
EXTENDED TRADING HOURS
Businesses may apply to the Municipality for extended trading hours. Approval is not automatic and is only granted in exceptional circumstances given that the purpose of the standard trading hours is to limit the hours of availability of liquor and to facilitate consistency and clarity for enforcement purposes.
Extended hours are only valid once written approval has been granted.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF LICENCE HOLDERS
All licence holders must:
- Display their liquor licence number, approved trading hours and zoning and fire safety certificates clearly on the front door or window of the licensed premises.
- Provide adequate lighting at entrances and exits to ensure the safety and security of patrons.
- Prevent noise and public nuisance.
- Keep premises and surrounding areas clean and litter-free.
- Ensure liquor is only sold within permitted hours and licence conditions.
- No consumption of liquor on off-site licensed premises i.e. Liquor Stores.
- No removal of liquor from on-site consumption premises (except where permitted, such as tourist facilities).
ENFORCEMENT AND COMPLIANCE
Authorised municipal officials, together with the Western Cape Liquor Authority and law enforcement, monitor compliance by inspecting premises. Failure to comply with the by-law may result in fines, closure of the business, seizure of liquor or imprisonment.
The regulation of liquor trading hours is not only about compliance - it is about balancing economic activity with the safety, peace, and wellbeing of our communities. Residents are encouraged to report concerns, while businesses are urged to operate responsibly and within the law.
