PUBLIC NOTICE: BUSINESS LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

The Langeberg Municipality hereby informs all residents and business owners that, in accordance with the Businesses Act 71 of 1991 and municipal procedures, certain categories of businesses are required to obtain a valid Business License before commencing operations.  

Licenses are compulsory for the following categories:  

- Food establishments – restaurants, cafés, takeaways, food trucks 

- Perishable food traders – milk, meat, fish, and similar products  

- Accommodation providers – hotels, guesthouses, boarding houses  

- Health facilities – saunas, massage parlours, beauty salons  

- Entertainment venues – cinemas, theatres, nightclubs, discos  

- Amusement facilities – slot machines, billiard tables, amusement arcades  

- Adult premises – as defined under the Films and Publications Act  

 Exemptions

The following businesses are exempt from licensing requirements:  

- State or municipal canteens  

- Charitable, religious, educational, or cultural institutions (profits devoted solely to the organisation) 

- Informal traders selling clothing, flowers, haberdashery, fruit, and vegetables from approved trading areas  

Application Procedure

1. Obtain the application form

2. Prepare documents  

   - Zoning compliance certificate  

   - Fire safety clearance  

   - Health compliance certificate  

   - For food premises: Certificate of Acceptability (Cape Winelands District Municipality)  

3. Submit application  

   Completed forms and proof of payment must be submitted to the Licensing Office.  

4. Inspection & compliance  

   Municipal officials will inspect premises for compliance with zoning, health, and fire regulations.  

5. Licenses are issued within 21 working days if all requirements are met.  

Important Notes

- Operating without a valid license is an offence and may result in fines or closure.  

- Licenses remain valid unless revoked or suspended for non-compliance.  

- Food businesses must hold both a Business License and a Certificate of Acceptability.
