SMOULDERING AT ASHTON LANDFILL SITE

Langeberg Fire Service wishes to inform the surrounding community that the landfill site located at Zolani, Ashton has been experiencing continual smouldering which releases smoke into the surrounding areas.

Our teams including assistance from Cape Winelands Fire Service from time to time have been monitoring the situation closely and have responded on several occasions to suppress visible flames and hotspots. Despite these interventions, underground smouldering continues due to the nature of the landfill materials, which can reignite and produce persistent smoke.

We are working in collaboration with the other municipal departments to implement both short term and long-term measures to minimize the impact. These include:

  • Regular inspections and suppression of hotspots
  • Application of fire control methods
  • Engagement with waste management department

We acknowledge the discomfort and health concerns that the smoke may cause for nearby residents, especially those with respiratory conditions. Community members are advised to:

  • Limit outdoor exposure when smoke levels are high
  • Keep windows and doors closed where possible
  • Seek medical attention if experiencing breathing difficulties.
  • The safety and wellbeing of our community remain our top priority. We assure residents that all possible steps are being taken to manage the situation and reduce smoke emissions

We appreciate your patience and will keep you updated.
