TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF MONTAGU CIVIC HALL DUE TO VANDALISM AND ELECTRICAL DAMAGE
The Municipality regrets to inform the public that the Montagu Civic Hall will be temporarily closed until further notice following a recent break-in that caused extensive damage to the facility's electrical infrastructure. During the incident, the refrigerator wiring was cut, electrical cables in the roof were removed, and several water pipes were damaged. Additionally, the memorial plaque located at the hall's entrance was stolen. Due to the severity of the electrical damage and the associated safety risks, all upcoming bookings and public events scheduled at the Civic Hall must be rescheduled or relocated to alternative venues. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and are working to identify suitable alternative venues for affected bookings. Individuals and organisations with scheduled events will be contacted directly by municipal staff to discuss arrangements. If not contacted, please follow up using the contact details provided below.
Ongoing vandalism is a growing concern. This latest incident marks the fourth case of theft or vandalism at Montagu Civic Hall in the past three months, raising serious concerns about the safety and security of municipal infrastructure. These repeated attacks cause significant financial losses and impact residents who rely on these public facilities for community functions, meetings, and events.
We urge community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity around public infrastructure to our 24/7 call centre.
