TEMPORARY TRAFFIC INTERRUPTIONS – TRANSPORT OF LARGE WIND TURBINE PARTS THROUGH ROBERTSON AND ASHTON
Traffic on the R60 will be temporarily affected once a week until July 2026. The Langeberg Municipality wishes to inform residents, businesses, and motorists of scheduled temporary traffic interruptions along Voortrekker Road (R60) through Robertson and Main Road, Ashton to Swellendam. These interruptions will occur once a week from November 2025 to December 2025 , excluding the holiday period from December 10, 2025, to January 13, 2026.
An application was received from Superload (Pty) Ltd for the transportation of wind turbine parts from Saldanha Bay to Swellendam, where the turbines will be erected as part of a renewable energy development. The Overberg Wind Farm consists of 39 wind turbines, manufactured in China and shipped to South Africa. Components arrive at Saldanha for logistical reasons and are then transported by road to Swellendam.
The Bigger Picture – Different Perceptions and Opinions
There are varying perceptions of the impact of this intervention. Management at Langeberg Municipality is aware of the importance of infrastructure, business disruptions, and resident frustration. However, wind farms make a significant contribution to the transition from carbon-based power generation to renewable and clean energy. The bigger picture of reducing global warming and pollution, as well as ensuring a sustainable power supply, is highly relevant. In simple terms, the process is disruptive for a short period but beneficial in the long run.
Convoys of Trucks and Different Sizes of Loads
All components are transported by trucks. Smaller items appear as normal loads, while larger components are abnormal loads transported in convoys. Each turbine has three blades, so convoys will include at least three trucks, often more. The tower, when erected, is 130m high and is transported in sections, weighing around 160 tons in total. Each blade is approximately 90m long and weighs about 30 tons, making transport challenging, especially through curves.
Preparation and Changes to Infrastructure
The abnormal load trucks cause most disruptions. Preparations include road inspections and modifications approved by municipalities. The logistics company assures that all changes will be restored and carries insurance for any damage. In Robertson, modifications include removing streetlights (to be replaced with solar-powered lights), adjusting a traffic circle, and pruning trees closer to transport dates.
Important to Inform the Public
Communication is key. Exact convoy times are hard to predict, so a WhatsApp group was created for real-time updates. Convoys take about 20 minutes to pass through Robertson, and traffic officers will manage the flow to minimise disruption. Only the main road will be affected.
Timing vs Peak Season
Transport coincides with peak farming season, when grapes and fresh produce are moved to wine cellars and packing facilities along the main road. Effective communication and traffic control aim to minimise disruptions.
Interaction Between Role Players
Coordination between the transport company, Provincial Traffic Police, and Municipal officials has been via email and calls. Effective collaboration remains essential for smooth operations.
Development and Construction of a Wind Farm
The process includes:
- Large companies with high carbon footprints are investing in wind farms.
- Approval for test towers and wind measurements.
- Selecting locations with consistent wind.
- Negotiating with landowners and signing contracts before inclusion in design and development plans.
Community Cooperation
The Langeberg Municipality appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation during this period. While some temporary inconveniences are expected, this project supports the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure in our region — a significant step towards a more sustainable future for all South Africans.
