VAN ZYL STREET SPORTS GROUNDS UPGRADE PROGRESS

The Van Zyl Street Sports Grounds in Robertson are taking shape, with the R9.98 million upgrade now approximately 65% complete. The improvements will provide the community with better sporting facilities and a more enjoyable environment for local sports. The project, implemented under Tender 57/2025 by Nyasha Empire, commenced on 7 April 2026.

The upgrade includes improved sports fields and drainage, a six-lane grass athletics track, cricket practice nets, refurbished player amenities, spectator fencing and high-mast lighting. Sand has been worked into the fields and irrigation pipes have been installed. The next step will be planting the grass. The high-mast lighting design plans will be finalised, after which the bases for the lights can be installed.

The completion date has been revised from 6 October 2026 to 30 November 2026. The contractor has been asked to put measures in place to make up lost time and minimise further delays. Once the construction work is complete, the newly planted grass will need time to settle properly before the fields can be used. The grounds are therefore expected to be ready for sporting clubs between April and June 2027, depending on the condition of the playing surface.

The project is primarily funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), with a Langeberg Municipal contribution and additional funding from the Provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS).

Residents are reminded that unauthorised access to the construction site is not permitted. Please keep clear of the site to help ensure everyone’s safety and protect the new infrastructure while the work is underway.
