WATER RESTRICTIONS LIFTED IN LANGEBERG MUNICIPALITY

Recent and most welcome rainfall, together with a steady improvement in dam levels across the municipal area, has stabilised municipal water resources. As a result, Langeberg Municipality will lift Level 1 water restrictions with effect from Friday, 1 May 2026.

During an Ordinary Council Meeting held on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, Council considered a report from the Civil Engineering Department on current dam levels, rainfall patterns, and water demand trends across the Langeberg municipal area. The Council resolved to lift Level 1 water restrictions, effective Friday, 1 May 2026.

This decision is mainly attributed to the end of the harvesting season—which is typically the peak period for water demand—cooler weather conditions, and the rainfall received across the area. However, water remains a scarce resource, and all consumers are still encouraged to use water sparingly.

Dam levels across the Langeberg municipal area have shown steady improvement following recent rainfall. The following levels were recorded on 24 April 2026:
- Dassieshoek Dam – 40%
- Koos Kok Dam – 75%
- Montagu Upper Dam – 5%
- Montagu Lower Dam – 61%
- McGregor Drinking Water Dam – 65%
- McGregor Rooi Dam – 42%
- McGregor Vaal Dam – 34%
- Ashton Storage Dam – 70%

While rainfall has contributed to improved inflows, dam levels remain under pressure and require ongoing careful management.

While this development is positive, water remains a limited and valuable resource, and long-term supply challenges persist. The Municipality cautions that water restrictions may be reintroduced should dam levels decline, water usage increase beyond sustainable limits, or prolonged dry conditions return to the area.

Residents are therefore urged to continue to:
- Practise water-saving habits
- Use water sparingly and responsibly
- Repair leaks without delay
- Avoid unnecessary or wasteful water use

Langeberg Municipality will continue to monitor water resources and system performance closely to ensure reliable service delivery and sustainable supply management. Residents will be informed of any significant changes in water status.
