OUTCOMES OF THE LANGEBERG COUNCIL MEETING REGARDING WATER RESTRICTIONS IN ROBERTSON

The Ordinary Meeting of Council held on 26 February 2025 addressed critical issues regarding water status and restrictions in Robertson. The following resolutions were unanimously adopted:

  1. Dassieshoek Dam Wall: The height of the Dassieshoek dam wall will be increased to boost water storage capacity by 30%.
  1. Brandvlei Canal Allocation: A follow-up on the application for increased water allocation from the Brandvlei canal will be pursued, with interactions with relevant authorities to ensure successful completion.
  1. Pumping Capacity Plan: A plan to enhance the capacity for pumping more water from the Brandvlei canal, including the possibility of an additional pipeline to the Gum Grove dam, will be submitted.
  1. De Hoop Water Scheme Maintenance: The grids in the water separation boxes from the De Hoop water scheme will be cleaned frequently.
  1. Flow Monitoring: The flow from the De Hoop water scheme will be measured and monitored, with a flow meter installed in the pipeline to the Gum Grove dam.
  1. Water Supply Management: The Municipal Manager and the Director of Engineering Services will manage the water supply to Robertson daily, based on the availability of existing water resources.
  1. Lifting Water Restrictions: Water restrictions will be lifted at the end of February 2025. However, water resource levels will be closely monitored, and level 1 water restrictions may be re-instituted if levels become critically low.
  1. Irrigation Water Restrictions: The current restriction on irrigation water use will remain to protect existing water resources.
  1. Farmer Water Allocations: Offers by farmers to take up their water allocations will be accepted immediately if water levels become critically low.
  1. Independent Investigation: An Independent Professional Water Specialist will be appointed to investigate the status of water supply and sanitation in all five towns in the Langeberg Municipal Servicing area. The investigation will include:
    1. Available water resources
    2. Ageing infrastructure
    3. Population growth
    4. Consumption patterns, including holiday periods
    5. Organizational structure of Engineering Services
    6. Split between Water Services Authority and Water Services Provider functions
    7. Section 78 Assessment on Water and Sanitation Function
  1. Public Communication: A press release will be issued to inform the public of the various challenges contributing to the water restrictions.
  1. Appreciation for Conservation Efforts: As a token of appreciation for the water conservation efforts of Robertson residents, level 1 penalty tariffs will not be imposed for February 2025. Consumers will receive their normal municipal accounts for water consumption during this period.
