WORKER’S DAY MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR - 1 MAY 2026

Workers' Day in South Africa is a public holiday on May 1st that commemorates the country's labour movement, celebrates workers' rights, and honours the role of trade unions and the working class in the fight against apartheid. It is rooted in the global International Workers' Day movement but has particular significance in South Africa for its connection to the struggle for democracy and social justice.

Worker’s Day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the dedication, resilience, and contribution of workers across all sectors. The day has its roots in the global labour movement, where workers stood together to advocate for fair working conditions, dignity, and equal rights.

From municipal employees who ensure essential services are delivered, to agriculture workers, small business owners, and those in the private sector, each plays a vital role in keeping our communities functioning and growing.

Today, we honour the value of hard work and the people behind it. Let us continue to work together to build an economy that is inclusive, fair, and beneficial to all.

WERKERSDAGBOODSKAP VAN DIE BURGEMEESTER - 1 MEI 2026

Werkersdag in Suid-Afrika is ’n openbare vakansiedag op 1 Mei wat die land se arbeidersbeweging herdenk, werkersregte vier en erkenning gee aan die rol van vakbonde en die werkersklas in die stryd teen apartheid. Dit het sy oorsprong in die internasionale Werkersdagbeweging, maar het besondere betekenis in Suid-Afrika weens die verbintenis met die stryd vir demokrasie en sosiale geregtigheid.

Werkersdag bied ’n geleentheid om die toewyding, veerkragtigheid en bydrae van werkers in alle sektore te erken en te vier. Die dag het sy wortels in die wêreldwye arbeidersbeweging, waar werkers saamgestaan het om vir billike werksomstandighede, waardigheid en gelyke regte te pleit.

Van munisipale werknemers wat verseker dat noodsaaklike dienste gelewer word, tot landbouwerkers, kleinsake-eienaars en diegene in die private sektor, elkeen speel ’n belangrike rol om ons gemeenskappe aan die gang te hou en te laat groei.

Vandag eer ons die waarde van harde werk en die mense daaragter. Laat ons voortgaan om saam te werk om ’n ekonomie te bou wat inklusief, regverdig en tot voordeel van almal is.
