Ashton residents to boil tap water before drinking with immediate effect

Langeberg Municipality asks residents to boil water as loadshedding hits treatment plants. The implementation of Eskom’s loadshedding above stage 4, highly impact the municipality’s ability to treat, disinfect and pump water effectively at our water and waste-water treatment plants. We urge residents of Ashton and Zolani to boil water for 1 minute to ensure the water is safe for consumption. Residents can also treat water with household chlorine bleach to disinfect water for consumption. Water boiling requirements: As a safety precaution residents should boil water for at least 1 minute to use for drinking purposes. Let it cool down and store water in clean food grade containers and cover containers. Alternative disinfection method for water: Mix one teaspoon of unperfumed Household Chlorine Bleach to 20 litres of water. Allow the mixture to stand for 2 hours. Keep the water covered with a cloth or lid to keep out flies and dirt. Your water is now safe to drink. We ask that the public please bear with us and assist us as far as possible as we face water supply shortage and sewage spillages related to extended periods of loadshedding. Langeberg Municipality will continue to test the water and monitor the quality of drinking water to inform residents when the water is safe for consumption to a degree where precautionary boiling is no longer required.
