UPDATE ON SEWER LINE NEXT TO RAILWAY, ROBERTSON

The sewer pipeline from Nkqubela to the Nestle sewer pumpstation was investigated due to the number of sewer spillages that took place on the pipeline as well as at the Nestle sewer pumpstation. The replacement of this pipeline with the correct pipe size, was prioritised and budgeted for, to provide a permanent solution.

The first phase was to install a new sewer pipeline from the Nestle pump station to the main sewer line connection that connects to the sewer treatment works. This pipeline has been installed and is operational.

The second phase was to replace the section from the Nkqubela entrance to Tecko and has been completed and operational since December 2024.

The last phase of the sewer line between Tecko and the Nestle pump station (new sewer line) will commence within the next two weeks and is expected to be completed before end of June 2025.

Upon completion of the replacement of the sewer line, the entire sewer line from the Nkqubela entrance to the main sewer line connection will be replaced.

Feedback on recent complaints of sewage overflow at one manhole and odour :

  • The pipeline behind the abattoir is still the old pipeline. This section will be replaced soon and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2025.
  • This explains the sewage overflow at one manhole and the accumulation of sewage water, as well as the odour. It is anticipated that the problem will be resolved with the replacement of the last section of the pipeline.
  • A recent pipe break on the sewer pump line near Nestle has been repaired.

Additionally, there is a stormwater issue that needs to be addressed. A large portion of the stormwater from Nkqubela currently flows to the land next to the railway line opposite Agri, exacerbating the problem. A survey will be conducted to find a permanent solution to this issue.

Mayor Schalk Van Eeden stated, "The municipality is committed to resolving the sewer line issues promptly. The completion of the final section by June 2025 will significantly improve the situation for our residents and businesses. We appreciate the community's patience and cooperation during this time."
