PROPOSED REDUCTION OF HEROES’ ACRE – WHITE STREET BURIAL SECTION, ROBERTSON

The Langeberg Municipality hereby invites members of the public to submit comments on a proposal to reduce the size of the Heroes’ Acre burial section, located within the White Street Cemetery in Robertson, in order to create additional burial space.

Background and Context

With the Municipality currently experiencing an increasing demand for burial space in Robertson a decision must be taken with consultation with our communities to ensure heritage preservation is balanced with service delivery needs to ensure continued access to dignified burial options for all residents.

A Heroes’ Acre is a dedicated cemetery area reserved for individuals who have rendered notable service to the community or country. It is not a legislated requirement, but an optional municipal provision, with burial allocation subject to approval by the Langeberg Municipal Council.

The White Street Cemetery is the only cemetery in the Langeberg Municipal area with a designated Heroes’ Acre. The area measures approximately 985 m² for 200 standard burial plots and to date contains one burial (a former SADF member who passed away during the Border War, which ended in 1989).

Need for the Proposal

Given the limited utilisation of the Heroes’ Acre to date, the absence of formal policy guidance, and the growing demand for burial space, the Municipality is considering reducing the size of this area to accommodate additional 200 standard burial plots.

The reduction may result in some or no remaining dedicated Heroes’ Acre space within the cemetery.

The municipality therefore invite input on whether and how such a space should be retained or defined in future ensuring that heritage, cultural, and social considerations are taken into account before any decision is made.

Call for Public Comment

All interested and affected parties are invited to submit written comments, concerns, or suggestions regarding the proposal to reduce the Heroes Acre.

Written or electronic comments must be submitted for the attention of the Municipal Manager by 30 April 2026.

INDIGENT HOUSEHOLD ROADSHOW

 Roadshows will be held in various areas in the greater Langeberg Municipal area as outlined in the table below. The Municipality will provide an opportunity and assistance to everyone who wants to submit applications at the offices outlined and, on the dates stated below, from 08:00 – 15:00.

Qualification criteria

·         Applicable to households on residential property.

·         Owner of only one property in the Republic of South Africa.

·         Only the accountholder may apply for Indigent.

·         Full-time occupant (Tenant) of the residential property or where the registered owner is unable to occupy the property.

·         Joint household income must not exceed R4 700.00 per month.

 Documentation needed:

·         Copy of ID and/or birth certificates of everyone staying on the property.

·         Proof of income of everyone staying on the property, i.e. pay slips, salary slips, bank statements or an affidavit for unemployment or self-employed.

·         Latest municipal account

Notice is hereby further given in terms of Section 21 and 21A of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (Act 32 of 2000) that the local community and affected parties are invited to submit comments or representations on the proposed amendment of the agreement. Such comments or representations must be submitted by not later than Friday, 27 MARCH 2026 at 12:00.
